A new research letter, published in ‘Palliative Medicine’ suggests that the demand for palliative care for people with dementia could rise as high as 676,000 by 2040.
This figure is based on if dementia were to increase in the next 30 years. In a scenario where this figure were to decrease, estimates suggest that the figure will still be around 399,000 people.
The project was jointly led by researchers at University College London and King’s College London, and used data up to 2023 on the number of people with dementia in England and Wales. The new figures are triple previous estimates, which were based on mortality data, rather than that of people living with dementia.
Emel Yorganci, lead author and research associate at King’s College London, said: “The current health and social care systems are not equipped to provide high-quality care and support to the increasing number of people with dementia and their families.
“The government must act now and prioritise investing in building health and social care systems and a workforce equipped to deliver palliative care to people affected by dementia.”
